How to Properly Insulate A Garage Subfloor
When it comes to energy performance and compliance in California, few details are as commonly overlooked and as critical as insulation installed over garage spaces. Section RA3.5.3.4.2 of California’s Title 24 Energy Code zeroes in on this exact condition, outlining what it takes to meet Quality Insulation Installation (QII) standards when conditioned space is built above a garage.
Key Requirements Builders Need to Get Right To Pass HERS Verification the First Time
- Insulation installed to maintain permanent contact with the underside of the subfloor decking above; or
- The insulation may be installed on the top side of the garage ceiling provided the perimeter framing being airtight and insulated vertically; or
- Fill the entire cavity with insulation
Insulation must extend fully and continuously to create a complete separation between the garage and living space.
All adjoining rim and band joists must be properly sealed and insulated.
